James Wan talks to Hollywood Reporter and reveals some details about the Aquaman set. Check out the interview:

James Wan is no stranger to franchises. After kicking off three hugely profitable horror series — Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring — he moved into the big leagues with 2015’s Furious 7, which grossed more than $1.5 billion globally. Now he’s in the midst of shooting Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa, Warner Bros.’ solo take on the character who’s set to enjoy his biggest platform to date in this November’s Justice League.

This week, Heat Vision hopped on the phone with Wan to discuss the prequel/Conjuring universe entry Annabelle: Creation, and during the chat he was game to answer a few questions about the forthcoming DC superhero entry. It came as no surprise when Wan said that shooting a film that takes place mainly underwater comes with a big set of challenges.

“It’s a very technically challenging shoot to be on,” said Wan as he was being shuttled to the film’s Australia set. “Working with water, and even the dry-for-wet sequences are very complex. … Our equivalent of two people sitting around chatting in the underwater world is super complicated. You have to think about CG with the hair, and how their clothing moves, how are they floating, what kind of rig we put them on and all that stuff. ”

The director went on to stress that much of this challenge derives from his commitment to shooting as much with the real actors as he can, skirting CGI wherever possible. “That just makes it very difficult and time-sucking and time-challenging to do all of this,” he continued. “So it’s not an easy shoot — but hopefully it will pay off in spades down the line.”

Speaking of waterlogged shoots, last month video of star Dolph Lundgren practicing underwater stunts for the film hit the web, giving fans their first glimpse of King Nereus in action. Aside from The Expendables franchise, the role is Lundgren’s highest-profile one in years, and Wan was quick to sing the actor’s praises when asked about casting the star of such brawny ’80s and ’90s action films as Rocky IV, Masters of the Universe and Universal Soldier.

“When I was in the process of writing this character [King Nereus] in the world of Aquaman, a friend of mine, [director] Mike Mendez, was working with him on one of his films, and Mike was just raving about how great Dolph was,” said Wan. “And I thought ‘Oh my god, Dolph would be great for this role as well!’ So it kinda came about from that roundabout way.”

In a recent interview to The Wrap James Wan reveals that Momoa stripped the stigmas within his character and explain more details about Aquaman. Check out the full interview bellow:

James Wan, director of upcoming “Aquaman,” is aware that the DC character is considered a bit of a joke by comic book readers.

Since the ’70s, Aquaman’s been the butt of endless barbs, largely thanks to Hanna-Barbera’s TV cartoon “Super Friends,” which depicted him as a wholesome superhero who rides seahorses and talks to fish.

Wan credits Zack Snyder for doing away with the stigma by casting the brooding Jason Momoa to breathe fresh life into Aquaman, calling the decision “a stroke of genius.”

“Momoa is not a guy that you would go up to and make fun of,” Wan told TheWrap. “I really think you immediately remove any of the stigma of the character from the cartoons that we are familiar with.”

Momoa was cast by Snyder as Aquaman back in 2013. He first appeared in Snyder’s 2016 superhero mashup “Batman v Superman.” Before the character’s standalone project, slated for release in 2018, he’ll next appear in this fall’s “Justice League,” alongside Gal Gadot, Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Ezra Miller and Ray Fischer.

DC President Geoff Johns revitalized Aquaman in 2011 when he took over as writer of The New 52, a relaunch by DC Comics of its monthly comics.

Johns presented Aquaman as a hero fighting for respect among the community he serves and protects. What resulted was a fresh, occasionally humorous reintroduction in part because Johns used the perceived silliness of Aquaman as part of the character’s foundation.

“Having said that, I’m not completely unaware of the stigma,” Wan added. “If anything, I embrace it and being able to laugh at yourself and have fun at yourself is important and that’s something I am aware of as I make ‘Aquaman’ right now.”

According to Deadline, Jason Momoa alongside his co-stars will be attending the San Diego Comic-Con on July 22, 2017.

The first two days of the San Diego Comic-Con schedule have felt a little light on the film side, right? Well, Warner Bros will give attendees a Comic-Con to remember with superheroes and Steven Spielberg. The Justice League gang will be there with Ben Affleck (Batman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Ezra Miller (The Flash) and Ray Fisher (Cyborg), not only talking up and showing off their November 17 release but also Christmas 2018’s Aquaman from director James Wan.
